This has been in the works for a long time, but our new office in Huntington Beach, California is finally up and running. We can’t thank our friends at No Sleep Records and SJC Drums enough for helping us get the ball rolling.

We’re still short on vans out there, so for the next few months we’re offering deals on one-way rentals that start on the East Coast and end in California. If you’re looking for a one-way van rental, get in touch ASAP and help us get more vans to our new office!

Most of the bands we work with really have it together when it comes to touring, but there are plenty of bands that could probably benefit from a little advice on how to make ends meet on the road. I came across a good article on the ASCAP blog that up and coming bands should read over.

Booking Your Own Tour: A How-To Guide

Last year, I went on two national tours covering 40 states and played over 100 shows. I booked nearly every show myself. It was my first time visiting about 30 of the cities, and many of the other cities’ venues I had never played before.

Both tours were financially successful. Let me say that again: on both tours, after expenses, I made money. It blows my mind that musicians tour and lose money. This is totally avoidable, but I hear many musicians just accept this as a reality of the road. Don’t. If you want to be a professional musician, you have to figure out how to actually make money with your music.

Topshelf Records FREE CMJ Showcase:

In case you missed it yesterday, Topshelf Records is putting on a CMJ showcase on October 19th at Suburbia in Brooklyn, NY. By “showcase” they mean party, and it’s gonna be a good one. We happen to be sponsoring it because we like that sorta thing, along with PropertyOfZack and Absolutepunk.net.

It’s been a long time coming but we’re proud of the final product and SO grateful for all of the hard work our talented friends have put into the project this year. Can’t wait for my friends to start pointing out all of my spelling errors now.

Greenvans office: Heli-fun

Ok. So. Kev is making me write a blog about the life and times of team Greenvans. I don’t want to, and I don’t have time, but in the interest of keeping the man in charge of the internetz happy and off my back, I’m going to try to make this a regular thing.

First of all, ~~not one single person on planet Earth cares about the amazing and complicated spreadsheets I spend my days building for our financial projections and customer records~~, so that’s out for a topic.
Nobody cares about ~~which vans need new tires and brakes and whose turn it is to drop them off at the shop~~. That’s out too.
So really all that’s left in our day-to-day at the office is the fierce competitions held between me and Teeny. This month’s competition: who is the best at landing a helicopter? ✔

Yes, my girlfriend’s mother did buy me a remote controlled helicopter for Xmas. Yes, It was the single best present I’ve ever received. Yes, you can buy it on Amazon for $29.99. Yes, I, of course brought it to the office. No, we haven’t gotten any work done since.

The object of the game, clearly, is to take a lap around the room and land said helicopter on the heli-pad. All four of the cross-tube ends have to fall within the circle for you to score a point (FIGURE A). NFL Rules apply (would we get sued for saying that?): If a cross tube end is touching the line, the result of the play is an incomplete pass… errr, the landing doesn’t count; no points for you (FIGURE B).

Each player gets four attempts (almost always ends up as four crashes) to make a clean landing. If you nail the landing you get a point and it’s the next players turn.

Current standings are shown in Figure C. As you can see, if Kevin would show up to work, he might not suck so bad at this game. [editor’s note: low blow!]

Justin and Alan are excused because they are the only ones around here who actually do anything. While it’s unclear who will pull away with the victory, it’s pretty obvious we all lose at MS Paint.

Andy's Greenvans Warped Tour recap

It has been about three weeks since I got home from a great summer out on Warped Tour 2011. Even though I’m a Warped Tour vet (this being my 6th year spending my summer living in a van cranking out over 25,000 miles) I have never worked harder in any two-month period in my life. There were certainly times when I wanted to jump on the next flight home and never look back, but the tour was an incredible experience for Greenvans that left me with some great friends and opportunities for the future. I’d like to first thank all of our rental customers who were dedicated enough to spend their summers living out of our vans. Many thanks to The Menzingers, The Blacklist Royals, A Shipwreck A Castaway, Arkaik Clothing, Freshdough Clothing, The Groundbreaking Ceremony, The Kiwi Schedule guys, Ken and Mike and all the Warped Tour bus drivers that hitched rides in the Greenvans support van, and last but not least, CHOONIMALS for being the absolute best dudes. Please check out all of these great bands and clothing lines. All of these guys are dedicated to what they do and are some of the hardest working people I’ve seen on the tour yet!

It was a great experience for Greenvans and it’s an honor to be part of such a long-standing and successful tour. Also, thanks to Drew Pogue for being the MVP of my summer. This kid saved my life by driving all night every night, running errands all day, and being my general moral support! Now that all the craziness of post-tour recovery has worn off, we’re looking forward to another busy fall and winter to close out this year. We already have some great bands going out in our vans in September and October — and November and December are booking up fast! If you’re in the planning stages of a winter tour, now would be a great time to get in touch with us to book a van rental before our schedule is full. We have a few very reasonably priced vans available for the winter if you book early!
